1. The Italian Foreign Affair Ministry (MAE) is financing twenty scholarships for a University Course on
Applied Anthropology and Development Processes. The Course will be organized by the “Dipartimento di Sociologia e Comunicazione” of the University “La Sapienza”, located in Rome, Via Salaria, 113. The course will start at the beginning of October 2009 and it will last four months.
Eligible countries are:
- Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Egypt, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Senegal;
- Marocco, Syria, Yemen, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Macedonia, Kosovo, Sri Lanka, Palestine;
- Bolivia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala and Perù.
The scholarship will last four months and includes:- A/R air ticket;
- Food and miscellaneous expenses;
- Accommodation;
- All other fees and taxes due to the Roma University;
- A two weeks full immersion in the Italian language with a course at the beginning of the lessons.
The applicant must have a first level university degree equivalent to an Italian
laurea triennale. The equivalence of the degree is recognized by the
Consiglio Didattico Scientifico of the Course.
The deadline for applications is 30
th July 2009. The applications should be presented to the Italian Embassy of the resident countries of the applicants by mid July 2009.

The documents presented should include:
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Copy of the university degree certified by the degree-granting institution;
- Letter of introduction and reference from a University professor;
- Cover letter stating the motivations for wanting to attend the course;
- Any documents, papers or publications written by the candidate that may demonstrate skills or work related to Course;
- Evidence of Proficiency in English.
2. Objective of the Course
The objective of the Course is to train specialists to be employed, in connection with development assistance programmes, in the so-called developing countries. The Course will cover material and fieldwork methods from the fields of anthropology, sociology, and political science. The course will seek to transmit basic skills on applied anthropology. These skills and methods will also be analyzed from a critical standpoint, looking at their significance and their theoretical usefulness. Then it will examine and discuss related specific themes such as: poverty, hunger, community, local development, and growth.
Particular attention will be dedicated to reflections on the potential role that anthropology can play in finding solutions to real problems in local communities. Emphasis will be placed on using anthropology as an analytical approach to address problems in society today. The course methodology will combine theory and practice. It will include face-to-face instruction, practical exercises, group work, and descriptions of real life applications by development practitioners.
The course will include training on the ground in fieldwork under the supervision of specialized teachers and trainers who will provide students with analytical frameworks that can be used for theoretical and applied anthropology. The course is intended to serve as professional training that will enable participants to interact with their peers in other disciplines and to appreciate how other perspectives can contribute to their work in applied anthropology. Moreover they will learn how they can provide inputs to influence the work of colleagues in other disciplines.
The training received could facilitate employment in the following fields:
- National expert for development project design and implementation;
- Basic anthropological research;
- Analysis of conflicts and cultural systems;
- Visual Anthropology;
- Museum work;
- Sustainable tourism.
The course will cover six teaching areas for a total of 550 hours. It will entitle the student to receive
20 Crediti Formativi Universitari that can be utilized for attending other Italian university courses.

Teaching will be done in English by (i) Professors from “La Sapienza” and from other Italian and European universities; (ii) International experts working in Development Agencies, UN Agencies (FAO, IFAD, UNDP and WFP) and EU agencies.
Students having attended at least 80% of the foreseen teaching hours will be provided with a certificate of acquired competence, referred to as “Certificate of attendance” as per University rules.
Lessons will be held every day from Monday to Friday. Each day there will be two hours with a professor and two hours of seminars and workshops. The student is expected to study individually at least two hours per day. Lessons will be held in English.
Professors will distribute papers before lessons and teaching materials will be in English.

- Certificate of attendance: the student will receive a Certificate of attendance, legally recognized according with the Italian law (Art. 16 del D.P.R. 10.3.82 n. 162)
