Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) will offer an English language training course in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City from November 2009 to February 2010 to assist students in meeting the academic English entry requirements for the PhD programme.
  • The course is called the English Proficiency Programme (EPP), and the students graduating from the programme receive a certificate and transcript from VUW recording their grades.
  • The course is a full-time academic English language programme designed to prepare students for University study at graduate level. Entry to the EPP requires English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 520. Students taking the course should be prepared to commit to 40 hours per week of study for 13 weeks.
  • The training course is available for any students with a PhD scholarship from the Ministry of Education and Training who intends to study at a university in New Zealand or Australia. Up to 50 students can be enrolled in Hanoi, and further places are available in existing VUW’s EPP programme in Ho Chi Minh City.
  • The programme will be offered by highly qualified native speakers of English seconded from VUW, with some assistance from a Vietnamese teacher.
  • The grades obtained by students in the EPP are accepted by New Zealand universities as an alternative to sitting IELTS or TOEFL tests, so (for those students obtaining a high enough grade in the courses) no further formal language tests will be required to obtain a student visa to begin study of the PhD degree in New Zealand. Students intending to study in Australia may be required to confirm their English proficiency by sitting an IELTS or TOEFL test according to their requirements of the individual universities.
The Fees for the course are as follows:
  • For any student enrolling the PhD program at VUW: students will be required to pay a deposit of US$800 on enrolling in the course, and this amount will be refunded to the students upon their enrolment in the PhD programme at Victoria University of Wellington.
  • For students enrolling in the PhD programme at any other university in Australia or New Zealand the course fee will be US$1800.
